In South Africa and Stellenbosch we celebrate the diversity of our communities and I am often heartened when I hear people with diverse backgrounds all referring to the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre as “our theatre”…
This year our commitment to strong community engagement is our driving force in making the theatre accessible to all people of Stellenbosch.

Individual triumphs and successes is what we aim for when presenting the brimming young talent of our country. The Distell Foundation supports many projects. Some of these talents will be showcased from time to time as a curtain raiser for other shows. Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) tango nuevo was distinct from the traditional tango in its incorporation of elements of jazz, its use of extended harmonies and dissonance, its use of counterpoint, and its ventures into extended composition forms.
Piazzolla started his new style of music during the 1950s. It was completely rejected by the Tango purists in Argentina but it took Tango music from the dance halls of Buenos Aires to the Concert stages throughout the world. Piazzolla inspired many classical musicians to perform his music during his lifetime and after his death.

Our own Cape Town Tango Ensemble, who happens to be the only Tango Orchestra in Africa, specializes in Tango music and specifically the music of Astor Piazzolla.

In “Piazzolla & Beyond” they are presenting some of the most celebrated works of Astor Piazzolla as well as works of contemporary composers, whose music was inspired by the Tanog Nuevo.

CT Tango Ensemble was established by the Classical Accordionist Stanislav Angelov in 1996. Since 1996 besides studying the music and most importantly the interpretation style of Astor Piazzolla the interest of this group of musicians spread into all styles of Tango music as well.

They have released 3 CDs (“El Tango en Africa” , “Tango Club” & “Tango Dreams), which are regularly played on Classic FM in Johannesburg & FMR in Cape Town as well as on many other radio stations in South Africa & abroad.

30 March 2011 – Premier of new South African Film “Visa Vie” in which 2 tracks from Tango Club are included in the sound track of the film – “Adios” & “Cape Town Tango”, both composed by Stanislav Angelov
13 April 2011 – “Tango Club” nominated for Best Instrumental Album for in the 17th MTN South African Music Awards.

In 2011 they were invited to tour Germany with their first concert, taking place at the prestigious Gewandhause in Leipzig, which was a great success.
In January 2014 they launched their latest CD “Tango Dreams” at ArtsCape Theater at a sold out show.

Stanislav Angelov Bulgarian born, holds Music degrees and diplomas from 3 continents – from Bulgaria, UK, South Africa & Argentina. He went to Argentina in 2005 to study Bandoneón (another member of the Accordion family) – the instrument, which Piazzolla played & the instrument, which is considered to be the soul of Tango music.

In 2004 Stanislav performed the Bandoneón (or Accordion) Concerto of Piazzolla with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the Spanish born Maestro Francisco Bonin. Same year he led the orchestra for the production of Piazzolla’s Tango Operita “Maria de Buenos Aires”. In 2012 he performed again the Bandoneón Concerto of Piazzolla with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the Columbian born Maestro German Gutierez.

Petrus de Beer is a classically trained violinist (MMus RSAMD) who resides in Paarl, South Africa.

He worked for the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra as a principal player and taught at various top music schools. Currently he free-lances in various combinations and styles, ranging from Classical, Blues and Jazz.  He has made numerous recordings for Television, radio, CD and DVD. He teaches violin and viola.

He was repetiteur for the UCT Opera School as well as Cape Town Opera, performing also as orchestral pianist and harpsichordist in operatic productions. RIELDANS back by popular demand.

Winners of the Riel dance competition in Los Angeles: Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers are back by popular demand performing at Oude Libertas. This time not just as a curtain raiser. These dancers had International competitors crying and bewildered. Never in South African history has this dance form ever won any awards let alone an International World Class Competition! Do NOT miss this fresh wonderful performance with footwork better than Michael Flatly and an indigenous band playing original instruments.
The revival of Riel dance in and around Wupperthal is a community initiative close to the heart of Bushmans Kloof and Floris Smith.
Don’t miss this truly South African success story on stage all the way from Wupperthal (West Coast).
