Tannie Evita takes on the roots of our Rainbow.

Uys dons false eyelashes and presidents listen. –  LA Times

Evita Bezuidenhout has been part of South Africa’s political sessions of Big Broeder since 1981 when the state was captured by the National Party. Once the former apartheid South African Ambassador in the Black Homeland of Bapetikosweti, she is now in the kitchens of Luthuli House where she cooks for reconciliation. She has always reminded us where we come from, so that we can celebrate where we are going. But since her three grandchildren have started asking questions about the past, Tannie Evita realises that while all the people of South Africa are now free to celebrate their history and their culture, some South Africans still are rootless. Especially the Afrikaner whose official history was often made up behind a desk in Pretoria as propaganda. What was fake news? How many details were alternative facts? Just days before the crucial ANC Congress to choose a new leader for the party and the country, Tannie Evita uses humour as her weapon of mass distraction, proving that sometimes history can repeat itself and turn tragedy into farce. The problems of the past, the issues of the day and the hopes for the future – all in the hands of the most famous white woman in the African National Congress, who now proves that there is still freedom of speech in Luthuli House. It is just sometimes after speech that freedom goes.

Radio Kalahari Orkes

8:15 pm - 9:45 pm

Price: R180 – R220

Radio Kalahari Orkes recently received the FAK prestige award for their contribution to promoting South African Folk Music.

Featuring the talent of IAN ROBERTS the Radio Kalahari Orkes has toured the length and breadth of South Africa, Namibia and The Netherlands.
Fronted by actor Ian Roberts, performing a folk-rock pastiche of Traditional Afrikaans with authentic acoustic instruments, their music stems from a deeply rooted place, taking in Ghoema, Latin and Africana music and anything else found lying around the dirt road.
The words, however, are focused firmly on the present. Their debut Album, Stoomradio, went gold and was accompanied by the acclaimed Harry Kalmer play, Die Vloek Van Die Strandjutwolf. This was followed by the SAMA nominated 2nd album, Nagloper, the soundtrack of the Rian Malan play of the same name and winner of the De Kat, Ramkat Award for best show at InnibosFestival.

Played on acoustic equipment nearly as old as their motto, the bands’ sound features variously; violins, accordions, konsertinas, mandolins, banjos, washboards, guitars, baritone guitars, pedal steel guitar, dobro, trumpets, contrabass, kazoos and Jan Vasmaak se mieliepitʻ Boozophoneʼ.
Wynand Davel –violin, Alicia van Dyk accordion & vocals, Bradley Cooper –drums & vocals, Barry Steenkamp –bass & vocals, Friso Woudstra –acoustic, electric guitars & banjo, Ian Roberts –vocals, acoustic guitar, pennywhistle & harmonica.

RKO se musiek strek van ‘n diep gewortelde plek, wat Ghoema-, Latyns- en
Africana-musiek aanneem, insluitend enigiets anders wat langs die grondpad te
vinde is.
