STRAWBS- Dave Cousins

27/01/2020
8:15 pm - 9:45 pm

Price: R250

Book

Dave Cousins founder of Strawbs initiated in 1964 with the bluegrass group Strawberry Hill Boys. Due to Dave’s unique fingerstyle guitar he was chosen to play for visiting artists Joni Mitchell, Mary Travers & Leonard Cohen during their British TV concerts. Strawbs reached Rubicon status in the seventies with hits such as, “Part of the Union” #2 1973, as well as “Lay Down“. The groups early days had future Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny on vocals while the group was also the launching pad for keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman, (future Yes) and Hudson & Ford. More artistically Strawbs blends acoustic medieval sounds with progressive rock expressing varied instrumentation from Dulcimer /Indian Sitar, mandolin and harpsichord. Notably the group is highlighted artistically by their long epic storyteller songs, often metaphoric with a deep spiritual innuendo. Albums like ‘From the Witchwood’ / ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Hero Heroine’ were standard purchase in the seventies adorned with immaculate artwork and prized amongst collectors, even to this day. Dave Cousins will be performing many of these Strawbs songs with an acoustic guitar, a debut performance for South Africa.
